After thorough testing the Alfa Romeo 177 made its debut at the 1979 Belgian Grand Prix. Its driver was Bruno Giacomelli, who had just won the Formula 2 championships with an unprecedented eight victories. Power for the 177 came from the same flat-12 unit used by Brabham in the previous seasons.
