Albert Kahn was hired by the Packard Motor Car Company of Detroit in 1903 to design new factory buildings. Kahn's initial building designs followed standard mill factory construction. In 1905 he designed Packard Plant Building #10 using reinforced concrete and the Kahn Bar System.

He had to work odd jobs to support his family, which meant he could not continue playing piano by the age of 7, at which he was considered a prodigy.

On Oct. 18, 1988, the New Center Building was renamed for its architect and longtime tenant, Albert Kahn. In 2001, the Albert Kahn Building and Fisher Building were sold to the Southfield-based Farbman Group for $31 million dollars. At the time of the sale, the Albert Kahn Building was 92% occupied. By the spring of 2014, occupancy had fallen.

Albert Kahn was born in 1869 in Prussia before his family emigrated to Detroit in 1890. His father was a rabbi and ran a restaurant in the city while his mother was a skilled musician and artist. In order to help support his family, Albert became an office boy and apprentice architect at John Scott & Company before being fired.

The first Packard was completed on Nov. 6, 1899, in Warren, Ohio. After James Ward Packard moved his fledgling car company to Detroit, Albert Kahn was hired to design a factory on 40 acres along Grand Boulevard. Kahn's use of reinforced concrete was a first for plant construction and made him the auto industry's go-to guy for factories.

She's participating in a two-month long project at Lawrence Technological University to highlight the work and legacy of Albert Kahn.. Khan was a German immigrant in the late 19 th century whose family arrived as part of a surge of immigrants looking for jobs in the United States.
